Ten years ago today dublinbikes launched on a sun-drenched morning in Dublin city centre.
The scheme, which was the first of its kind in Ireland, initially set its first-year membership target at 5,000 subscribers.  The service proved to be a great success from the beginning with more than 1,000 people signing up to use the bicycles on the first day alone and over 11,000 applying for membership in the first fortnight.  Since then the scheme has become Just Eat dublinbikes and it has gone on to exceed all expectations and is widely considered to be one of the most successful bike-sharing schemes in the world.

Owen Keegan, Chief Executive of Dublin City Council recalls before the scheme launched “There was a degree of uncertainty to its success at the time as it was the first public bike scheme in Ireland.   It turned out that none of those concerns were justified, the scheme has been very well received by the people of Dublin from the beginning. Dublin City Council would like to thank all of the subscribers who have embraced this scheme as a way to get around the city and have made dublinbikes a successful part of Dublin life over the last ten years.”

When the service began as dublinbikes in 2009 there were 450 bicycles and 40 stations in Dublin city centre. Exceptionally strong levels of demand for the service resulted in calls for extensions to the scheme which were delivered in 2011, 2013 and 2018.  The footprint of the scheme has grown considerably as a result and there are now 1,600 bicycles available at 116 stations. Currently there are 66,940 active annual subscribers and to date more than 28 million journeys have been made on the bikes in the capital. These are significant numbers and there’s no doubt that, as well as offering people a healthy alternative means of transport, the dublinbikes scheme has helped reduce traffic congestion in the city centre and it is estimated that through car journey substitution with dublinbikes a reduction of 7,278 tonnes of carbon has been achieved in Dublin over the past 10 years.

Amanda Roche Kelly, Managing Director, Just Eat said: “Just Eat is honoured to be associated with the much loved Just Eat dublinbikes. We are delighted that our support has helped to enable the continued growth and expansion of the scheme, delivering opportunities for people in Dublin to travel the city easily – for work, or for pleasure.  I would like to congratulate Dublin City Council and JCDecaux for their excellent stewardship of Just Eat dublinbikes. We look forward to celebrating the ten-year anniversary milestone with our partners and with the thousands of Just Eat dublinbikes users who are at the heart of this great scheme.”

Joanne Grant, Managing Director JCDecaux said “We are extremely proud of what dublinbikes has achieved over the past 10 years.  The scheme has gone from strength to strength and has made a hugely positive impact on day to day life in the city.  We are looking forward to working with Dublin City Council and our commercial partners Just Eat to take the scheme to the next level with the introduction of further enhancements which will make it even more accessible and ensure Just Eat dublinbikes continues to make a real and valuable difference in the future.”
